Hydrogen is easy to store and can be used in various applications as a source of energy. The gas produced in Mainz can, for example, be transported by tank trucks to hydrogen fuelling stations, where it is used as an environmentally friendly fuel for emission-free fuel cell vehicles.
Another application for hydrogen arises by feeding the gas into the natural gas grid, where it is available for gas heating, modern gas plants, as well as for combined heat and power units. Within the research project, it will also be tested whether the hydrogen from “Energiepark Mainz” can be used to fuel the steam turbine power plant of Kraftwerke Main-Wiesbaden AG at Ingelheimer Aue. This re-conversion to electricity could guarantee a green power supply, even when there is no wind.
